Oomisoka – New Year’s Eve

Tomorrow is New Year’s Eve in Japan. New Year’s Eve is called ‘Oomisoka’ in Japanese. People are busy with events on Oomisoka. We eat sobal noodles called ‘toshikoshi soba’ (year-crossing soba) to wish for a long lasting life.

At night time, many people get together at countdown events. At Buddhist temples, huge bells are hit 108 times during midnight to get rid of all evil desires. Year-end and New Years events are very important for Japanese people. Because these events are based on Japanese tradition and are deeply related religion.
